Pumpkinheads by Rainbow Rowell
In this aesthetic af graphic novel we follow Deja and Josiah on their last night working together at a pumpkin patch theme park – which also happens to be Halloween night! It becomes a night of exploration and adventure as they discover all that the park has to offer. This graphic novel will 100% get you into the Halloween mood and will leave you desperate for a pumpkin spice coffee and a caramel apple…

Mooncakes by Suzanne Walker
Probably one of the most popular graphic novels of last autumn, Mooncakes is a cute and queer story that includes love, demons, family and witchcraft. Nova, a teen witch, works at her grandmothers’ bookshop where she helps loan out spell books and investigate supernatural goings on around town… just perfect for this time of year! This story includes disability and sexuality rep which is super cool to see too.

Moonstruck Vol.1 by Grace Ellis
Not to be confused with Mooncakes, Moonstruck Vol. 1 follows barista (!?) Julie and her new girlfriend as they go on a date to a close-up magic show where all hell breaks loose. The art style is really autumnal and cute and includes all different types of magical creatures and all different body types – a total joy to read!

The Witch Boy by Molly Ostertag
Another art style that just screams autumn/spooky season, The Witch Boy follows 13 year old Aster who is raised in a family where girls are witches and boys have to be shapeshifters – and nobody is allowed to change this.
Aster, unfortunately, hasn’t shifted yet and is trying to figure out what is drawing him to witchery… This beautiful story explores gender roles and stereotypes and what this means for your own identity whilst also including magical fun! Another must-read for this time of year.

Paper Girls Vol. 1 by Brian K Vaughan
This one is quite popular so you may have already read it but Paper Girls Vol. 1 is set on Halloween night 1988 where four 12 year old newspaper delivery girls uncover a spooky strange story that will change their lives forever. I thought this was fun and spooky but be warned there is use of some outdated language and opinions in here that reflect the 1988 context.

Yes I 100% agree that Pumpkinheads is the perfect fall read. It was such a fun read and I wish the pumpkin patch was real. I remember there was this food I believe called pumpkin bombs or something along those lines that sounded heavenly. I haven’t read Moonstruck or The Witch Boy but will have to check those out. Of these I’ve only read Pumpkinheads (I totally agree that it has really cute and cosy autumn vibes!) but I really want to read those others! I’ve heard so many good things about Mooncakes especially.
