Autumn (or as some say – ‘fall’) is my favourite season. To celebrate the fact that we’re getting closer and closer to September I’m going to do a short series of cozy autumn/fall book recommendations to get you in the spirit of the season.
Today we’re starting with my top adult book recommendations.
The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson
When I first thought up this idea, this book was actually the first one I thought of. It encapsulates the creepy but cozy vibes of autumn so well that I consider it a must read. Most will know the show, but I think reading the book is a wholly different experience that is well worth your time.
Bonus suggestion is We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson which is another fantastically creepy story that is perfect for spooky season.

The Secret History by Donna Tartt
Another must read at this time of year, The Secret History is a rich, luxurious reading experience that has all of the dark academia vibes you could ever ask for. It was one of my favourite books of 2019 and is a book that I will just keep recommending until everyone has experienced it.
Another bonus suggestion by Donna Tartt is The Goldfinch, although some of it is set during the summer it has sections that make for perfect autumnal reading.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
Often shelved as YA, this beautifully magical story is mysterious and tense and slowly unravels to revel plot that you’re not expecting. The writing is also whimsical and lyrical so that you have a sensory experience whilst reading it – you can almost taste the food, almost smell the air – that kind of writing.
I have to do another bonus recommendation, The Starless Sea, a book that literally left me speechless.

Assassins Apprentice by Robin Hobb
As the darker nights draw in and we spend more time under blankets reading, it’s a perfect time to get stuck in to longer novels. Assassins Apprentice is the beginning of a long trilogy that transports you to a magical world that is so incredible and vast you’ll have a hard time believing you didn’t actually go there. I read this trilogy earlier in the year and it’s a new favourite of all time.

Nevernight by Jay Kristoff
Another favourite series! Nevernight is unlike anything else that I’ve ever read. The footnotes are something you need to get used to but once you do you find a witty and sarcastic narrator who helps propel the story forward. Kristoff does not hold his punches so this story will surprise you but it’s perfect for those longer evenings where you want to be entertained. The rest of the series is already published so you can binge it all in one go!
