2019 Reading Goals

Despite being super busy in 2018 I still managed to read 153 books. However, I have a sneaky suspicion that this year is going to be even busier for me so I’ve set my Goodreads challenge at a conservative 120 books. With that in mind, let’s talk about some goals.

Book buying ban

I follow Sophie’s (PortalInthePages) reading spreadsheet each year (download here) and found that I spent a TONNE of money on books last year, and received quite a few books as gifts. I didn’t use the library once…

After some thought, I’ve decided to limit my book buying to just highly anticipated reads that I can buy new from Amazon or local bookshops. Otherwise, I really want to try and use my library more. I went today to check it out and my local library has huge science fiction and graphic novel sections which is very exciting!

Re-reading

This goes hand-in-hand with the previous goal, but I want to re-read more books in 2019. Last year I re-read quite a few books from my childhood and from more recent years and I really loved it. It was super interesting re-reading some of my acclaimed favourites with a more critical eye and upon re-reading they did often have a different star rating.

I have written down all of the books, that I currently own, that I want to re-read and put them in a jar – the plan is to pull a few each month to read and report back on…

Not just YA fantasy

After looking at my reading stats for last year I read literally 49% YA fantasy… then 16% science fiction and then various others. I think I may have exhausted the genre for me. I desperately need to change it up a bit! I will, of course, continue to read fantasy because it’s my favourite genre, but I want to actively seek out others that I usually wouldn’t reach for. Let’s try and stretch our bookish legs here.

Read longer books

After completing a couple of 1000 page books last year I’m feeling really inspired to keep up that momentum. Just like with the re-reads, I’ve written down all of the 500+ page books that I already have on my shelves and I will try and read at least one a month. Wish me luck!

That’s a wrap on my bookish goals for 2019! I want to continue to try and read more diversely and generally push myself, but these are specific goals I want to try and accomplish in the next twelve months. What are your new reading goals?

  1. These are fantastic goals!

And that first one… ughhhhhh… I so need to do a ban, too, but it’s just REALLY hard! I always find excuses to buy more books.

I keep telling myself I need to utilize my library more, too, but I have so many books that I own that are unread, so I feel like I need to read those first.

Life is hard when you’re a bookworm. LMAO

    1. I feel you girl! I’m just going to try and get the balance right this year – I will probably still buy some books (shhh) but as long as I’m using the library as much as possible I’ll feel less terrible! Just got to do what feels right for you. What book are you reading next?
