To be honest, I can have some rather unpopular opinions when it comes to books. It’s far too easy to get carried away with the hype (and believe me I’ve done that before) and think that the book is without fault. It’s important to come to your own conclusions and not to worry too much if you don’t love a book that everyone enjoys.
A POPULAR BOOK I DIDN’T LIKE
I could probably write a whole list of them, but the top two that spring to mind are A Darker Shade of Magic and Red Rising. A Darker Shade of Magic was a huge letdown for me. It was a super interesting concept, but it was poorly executed. The biggest disappointment was that London was written so poorly that I couldn’t even begin to believe the characters were parading around in its streets.
Whereas Red Rising was just slow and unnecessarily heavy. It was almost like the author just wanted to put The Hunger Games on Mars. Also, Darrow was just too perfect… no thanks.
A POPULAR BOOK EVERYONE HATES BUT I LOVE
The Vampire Academy. I don’t know if everyone hates this one, but they definitely think it’s frivolous. I haven’t read the rest of the series yet, but vampire YA fiction has a special place in my heart. (Maybe because I grew up reading Twilight…?)
A LOVE TRIANGLE WHERE THE MC ENDED UP WITH THE WRONG PERSON
I don’t know about love triangles but I hated the fact that Harry ended up with Ginny. She was such a boring, and obvious choice. Why didn’t he see Hermione as more than a friend? They had so much tension!
A POPULAR GENRE I NEVER REACH FOR
I am obsessed with YA fantasy, but hardcore high fantasy is so intimidating. Why must they be over 1000 pages long? Why must they have hundreds of characters? Why do they have so many books in one series? le cry
A BELOVED CHARACTER I DON’T LIKE
Clary from the Mortal Instruments series. She makes so many stupid decisions and is entirely shallow. Also, she spends hundreds of pages whining about everything, and don’t even get me started on how boring she is compared to the other characters…
A BELOVED AUTHOR I CAN’T GET IN TO
V E Schwab. I keep trying, but I’m always slightly disappointed with the end result. Sorry!
A TROPE I AM TIRED OF READING
The ‘chosen one’. I loved it in Harry Potter and Sarah J Maas can do no wrong in my eyes but, why must every YA story include an MC who is the answer to all of the world’s problems? It’s just ridiculously unrealistic. We need less of this and more MC’s who are stumbling through a world that they have no control over.
A SERIES I HAVE NO INTEREST IN READING
Unfortunately, I will *probably* never read Game of Thrones. The show is pretty ridiculous so I couldn’t even begin to imagine trying to read the many, many books that George R.R. Martin has written.
THE MOVIE IS WAY BETTER THAN THE BOOK
The Maze Runner. The books were pretty standard dystopian YA novels, but the movies are awesome! I just heard that there is another one coming out soon… exciting times indeed.

I thought I was the only one who didn’t like A Darker Shade of Magic! I expected so much more than what I got. I think that V.E. Schwab isn’t for me. I wasn’t really into Vicious either.
